Getting Fruity
As we remain in Jesus, the Fruit of the Spirit will grow in us.

4th Grade SMM
This year we're going to learn how to be a team.  We will work together on challenging activities.  We're going to study the Bible, because it's as important as the food we eat. We're going to start by looking at God's amazing plan for creation. Then we'll study the effects of sin and the new life that is found in Jesus Christ our Savior. Then we'll talk about what it looks like to grow in Jesus. We're going to pray together because God can do amazing things.  Supporting missionaries is also one of our goals.  Just check out some of our missions opportunities at the bottom of this page.

Possible problem solving
Debriefing
Learn leadership
Show genuine love to others

Need:Clothes basket, clean clothes, suitcase, clothes or rags with various stains, vinegar, rubbing alcohol, hairspray, spray bottle, dish soap, sink, an old toothbrush

Project Manager: The project manager should be someone who can fold clothes well in order to teach others. The project manager may want to bring in a suitcase or stained clothes from her own home. Scripture: 1 John 3:16 “We know what real love is because Christ gave up his life for us. And so we also ought to give up our lives for our Christian brothers and sisters.”

There will be two or more stations.  The first is a folding station. The second is a suitcase packing station and the third is a stain removing station.  The project manager can train the girls to fold.  The other girls can rotate to each station.

Am I Becoming more Fruity?

“But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.” –John 14:26

Objective: To ask the question: What kind of fruit? After reading John 15. To make the girls aware of the Fruit of the Spirit, to teach them that this fruit should not be forced but the Holy Spirit produces it when we remain in Jesus, to help them to recognize fruit in each other.
Materials: Copies of the Worksheet, Bibles, a concordance (optional). Paper for making cootie-catchers, piece of fruit to throw and maybe even eat.
Preparation: Pray for the Fruit of the Spirit in the lives of the girls, The directions for the cootie-catchers are a little confusing. If you are not familiar with cootie catchers then your girls can probably help. Otherwise, you can change this activity. Optional: Write the fruit of the Spirit on a piece of fruit. Go through the lesson and highlight the parts that you will use with your group.

Who can recap the story of the forbidden fruit and the first sin?

Read John 15:1-17. What is the main idea from John 15:1-17? What does Jesus mean when he says that we will bear fruit? What kind of fruit? Does the Bible tell us? Where?

Optional: Use a concordance to look it up.

Main Verses
Colossians 1:6-10
Galatians 6:4-10
Discussion: What is good fruit in the lives of those who follow Jesus Christ?

Fruit=Changed Lives
Our lives change and so do the lives of those around us when we are fruity.
Do you know anyone who changed dramatically after they decided to follow Jesus and received the Holy Spirit? One of the most amazing things about being a Christian is that when we truly follow Jesus we will change. The change in us brings so much glory to God.

Does it happen over night? No, it happens over time. Do you think that you do a good job of allowing God’s Holy Spirit to change you? Can you give an example of how you have changed or submitted to God?

How do our lives look as we change and follow Jesus?

Activity:
You may want to begin the worksheet activity by helping the girls to learn to draw a tree. If you are not artistic then there may be a girl in the group who can draw a pretty good tree and help the others.
Use Galatians 5:14-26,6:4-10 to draw your trees on the worksheet. Label the fruits of the sinful nature on one tree and then the fruit of the Spirit on the other.
Thinking Questions:
Which kind of person would you want to have for a friend?
Which kind of person would you want to have for a husband?
Which kind of person would you want to have for a mom?

Activity
Let’s make cootie-catchers. We will list the fruit of the Spirit and then when you open the flap you will find a verse that addresses that fruit. We’ve got work to do.
Directions: Begin by making a square from your piece of paper. Then fold the square so that it make four equal boxes when you open it. Next, fold the square diagonally. After that, you will fold each corner of the square until the tip of the corner meets the middle. Now you have a smaller square. Repeat the last step and fold each of the corners of the smaller square inward. Now grab the folds and tuck them in underneath.
Now you are ready to write clue words or numbers on the first flaps. Then the fruits of the spirit on the inside flaps. Lastly right the verses that you choose for each fruit on the inside folds. Now use your cootie-catcher. Have someone choose a number. Count as you open and close the folds and then find the verses for the fruit you choose in your Bibles.

Suggested Verses:
Love: 1 Cor. 13:4-12
Joy: Nehemiah 8:10b
Peace: Isaiah 26:3
Patience: Prov. 19:11
Kindness: Gen. 24:14
Goodness: 2 Peter 1:5
Faithfulness: 3 John 1:3
Gentleness: Phil. 4:5, 1 Peter 3:15
Self-Control 1 Thes. 5:6, Titus 2:5

Activity:
Give the girls some time to memorize the fruit of the spirit. Have the group stand or sit in a circle. The girls will throw a piece of fruit to each other. When someone receives the ball they have 5 seconds to name a fruit of the Spirit that has not already been said. If you name a fruit that has been said or don’t name a fruit at all then you are out. The game continues until only the winner is left. Two girls or leaders will lead the game. One will be the timer and count of 5 seconds each time the fruit is thrown. The other will record which fruits have been said.
Variation: You can also pass an orange with a permanent marker and have the girls write the Fruit of the Spirit on the piece of fruit. The leader could also write the Fruit of the Spirit on the fruit ahead of time.
As you Leave: When we see fruit in each other’s lives; let’s encourage one another. It’s not about showing off. It’s about giving glory to our great God because when people see us they want to see Our Master living in us.

SMM
Colossians 3:24
Just think about the way that God actually made a color code for almost every fruit and vegetable. Without that we wouldn't know when our fruit is ripe. How Great is Our God!!
